Anthropic Cuts Off Claude Subscriptions for Third-Party Tools Like OpenClaw

Anthropic announces that Claude Pro and Max subscriptions will no longer cover usage through third-party tools like OpenClaw, citing unsustainable infrastructure strain from agent-driven usage patterns.

Anthropic has announced that starting April 5, 2026, at 12pm PT, Claude Pro and Max subscriptions will no longer cover usage through third-party tools such as OpenClaw. The change reflects a growing tension in the AI industry between flat-rate subscription models and the heavy, continuous usage patterns generated by autonomous AI agents.

Key Changes

  • Claude subscriptions will no longer work with third-party agentic tools starting April 5
  • Users must purchase discounted "extra usage" bundles or use a Claude API key instead
  • A one-time credit equal to the monthly subscription price is offered to existing subscribers, redeemable until April 17
  • Users who pre-purchase extra usage bundles can receive up to a 30% discount
  • Full refunds are also available for affected subscribers

Why the Change

Boris Cherny, Head of Claude Code at Anthropic, explained the reasoning: "We've been working hard to meet the increase in demand for Claude, and our subscriptions weren't built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools."

According to Anthropic, third-party harnesses were placing an "outsized strain" on the company's infrastructure. The company says it needs to prioritize capacity for customers using its core products to serve them sustainably long-term.

Community Reaction

The announcement sparked heated debate across social media, with over 21,000 posts on X discussing the policy change within hours.

Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw, pushed back against the decision. He alleged that Anthropic had absorbed features from his open-source software into its closed system before blocking alternatives. "Funny how timings match up," Steinberger noted.

However, Steinberger also acknowledged Boris Cherny's efforts to soften the impact, crediting him with contributing cache efficiency improvements that could help reduce costs for affected users.

Industry Implications

The decision highlights a fundamental challenge facing the AI industry: flat-rate subscription models are increasingly incompatible with agent-driven systems that generate continuous, heavy usage. As AI agents become more sophisticated and autonomous, traditional pricing assumptions are breaking down.

While other AI providers including OpenAI and several Chinese companies still support OpenClaw, Anthropic reportedly handled the majority of traffic due to Claude's strong performance in coding and agentic tasks. Whether competitors can sustain comparable pricing under similar demand pressure remains an open question.

What This Means for Developers

Developers and power users who rely on third-party tools with Claude will need to transition to one of the following options:

  • Extra usage bundles tied to their Claude login, now available at a discount
  • Claude API keys through Anthropic's developer platform for more granular usage control
  • Alternative AI providers that still support third-party tool integrations

The enforcement begins with OpenClaw and will be rolled out to all third-party harnesses in the coming weeks.
