Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck's AI Filmmaking Startup InterPositive

Netflix has officially acquired InterPositive, an AI-powered filmmaking tools startup co-founded by actor and director Ben Affleck. The deal, whose financial terms remain undisclosed, marks a significant step in the streaming giant's strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into its content production pipeline.

What Is InterPositive?

Founded by Ben Affleck in 2022, InterPositive developed AI tools specifically designed to assist filmmakers during post-production. The technology builds a proprietary AI model based on a production's existing footage, allowing directors and editors to leverage that model for enhancing the final product.

Key Capabilities

InterPositive's AI tools enable production teams to perform several advanced tasks:

Remove wires from stunt sequences
Reframe shots and adjust camera angles
Capture missed shots that weren't filmed during production
Adjust and shape lighting
Enhance backgrounds and visual effects

"You can use your own model to remove the wires on stunts, reframe a shot, get a shot you missed, shape the lighting, enhance the backgrounds," Affleck explained.

Netflix's Vision

Elizabeth Stone, Netflix's Chief Product and Technology Officer, emphasized that the acquisition aligns with the company's responsible approach to AI. "Our approach to AI has always been focused on meaningfully serving the needs of the creative community and our members. Innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them," Stone said.

She added that "people — and their ideas, craft and judgment — remain at the core of great storytelling."

Affleck's New Role

Ben Affleck will join Netflix as a senior advisor following the deal's completion. He has also joined the Creators Coalition on AI, which advocates for "human-centered innovation" in entertainment rather than full AI replacement of creative professionals.

Industry Impact

The acquisition comes amid ongoing debate in the entertainment industry about AI's role in filmmaking. InterPositive distinguishes itself from other AI companies by focusing on post-production assistance rather than generating fully synthetic content or replacing actors.

The union IATSE declined to comment on the acquisition, reflecting the sensitivity around AI in Hollywood, particularly following recent industry strikes over the technology's use.
