OpenAI Launches Codex Security — An AI Agent That Finds and Fixes Vulnerabilities in Your Code

OpenAI has officially launched Codex Security, an AI-powered application security agent designed to go beyond surface-level vulnerability scanning. The tool, now available in research preview, uses frontier AI models to build deep context about a project's architecture, identify complex security flaws, and propose targeted fixes — all while filtering out the noise that plagues traditional security tools.
From Aardvark to Codex Security
The product, formerly known as Aardvark, has been in private beta with a select group of customers since last year. During that period, OpenAI says the tool surfaced critical real-world vulnerabilities including a server-side request forgery (SSRF) and a cross-tenant authentication flaw — both patched within hours of discovery.
The beta also served as a proving ground for quality improvements. OpenAI reports that noise has been cut by 84% in some repositories, false positive rates dropped by over 50%, and over-reported severity has been reduced by more than 90%.
How It Works
Codex Security takes a fundamentally different approach from typical static analysis tools:
- Threat model generation — It analyzes your repository to understand your system's security-relevant structure and generates an editable, project-specific threat model.
- Prioritized validation — It pressure-tests findings in sandboxed environments, categorizing them by real-world impact rather than generic severity scores.
- Context-aware patching — Proposed fixes align with your system's intent and surrounding behavior, reducing the risk of regressions.
The agent also learns from your feedback. When you adjust a finding's criticality, it refines the threat model for future scans.
Scale and Results
Over the past 30 days, Codex Security scanned more than 1.2 million commits across external beta repositories. It identified 792 critical findings and 10,561 high-severity findings. Notably, critical issues appeared in under 0.1% of scanned commits — a signal-to-noise ratio that OpenAI says will continue improving.
Open Source Gets Security Access
Alongside the launch, OpenAI expanded its Codex Open Source Fund ($1 million) to now include conditional access to Codex Security for core maintainers of widely-used public projects. Eligible developers also receive six months of ChatGPT Pro with Codex for day-to-day coding and triage workflows.

Availability
Codex Security is rolling out now to ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Edu customers via the Codex web interface. Usage is free for the first month during the research preview period.
