Stripe Launches Machine Payments Protocol: AI Agents Can Now Make Autonomous Payments

Stripe and blockchain startup Tempo have officially launched the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), an open standard that enables AI agents to autonomously conduct financial transactions with businesses and other agents across the internet.

What Is MPP?

The Machine Payments Protocol is an internet-native payment specification designed for the era of autonomous AI agents. Unlike traditional payment systems built for human users, MPP allows agents to programmatically discover, negotiate, and complete payments without human intervention.

The protocol works through a simple flow: an agent requests a resource from a service or API endpoint, the service responds with a payment request, the agent authorizes the payment, and the resource is delivered — all happening in milliseconds.

Multi-rail support: MPP supports stablecoins, credit and debit cards, and buy-now-pay-later options through Shared Payment Tokens (SPTs)
Microtransaction-friendly: Designed for the small, frequent payments that agent workflows demand — from fractions of a cent for API calls to full purchases

Visa Joins as Design Partner

In a significant endorsement, Visa contributed to the protocol's development, extending MPP to support card-based payments on its network. This means AI agents can now transact using the same card rails that power trillions of dollars in annual commerce.

Early Adopters Already Live

Several companies have already integrated MPP into their services:

Browserbase offers per-session browser infrastructure where agents pay only for what they use
PostalForm enables agents to pay for printing and sending physical mail
Prospect Butcher Co. allows agents to order sandwiches for NYC pickup and delivery
Parallel Web Systems provides pay-per-API-call web access for agents

The Tempo Blockchain

Underpinning MPP is Tempo, a Layer 1 blockchain incubated by Stripe and crypto venture firm Paradigm. Tempo's mainnet launched simultaneously on March 18, 2026, providing instant settlement, predictable low fees, and high throughput for machine-to-machine payments at scale.

The blockchain completed its public testnet phase in December 2025 with participation from major global companies, signaling enterprise-level interest in autonomous payment infrastructure.

The rise of agentic AI has created a new category of economic activity: machine payments. As AI agents increasingly handle tasks like purchasing computing resources, accessing datasets, booking services, and managing subscriptions, they need a payment infrastructure purpose-built for their speed and scale.

What Comes Next

Stripe has also announced an Agentic Commerce Suite and Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) alongside MPP, along with support for the x402 HTTP payment standard. Together, these tools aim to create a complete infrastructure layer for the autonomous AI economy.

The protocol is open and extensible, meaning additional payment rails and capabilities can be added over time as the ecosystem matures.
