Google Maps Gets Its Biggest Upgrade in a Decade with Gemini AI-Powered Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation

Google has unveiled what it calls the biggest navigation upgrade in over a decade, integrating its Gemini AI models directly into Google Maps with two headline features: Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation. The announcement, made on March 12, 2026, marks a significant shift from static map navigation to an intelligent, conversational experience.

Ask Maps: Talk to Your Map

The standout feature is Ask Maps, a Gemini-powered conversational interface that lets users ask complex, real-world questions that traditional maps could never answer. Instead of typing a business name or category, users can now pose natural language queries like:

• "My phone is dying, where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?"
• "Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?"
• "I'm headed to the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Coral Dunes, any recommended stops along the way?"

Google says Ask Maps draws on information from more than 300 million places, including community reviews, to generate tailored responses. The feature can also build trip itineraries and provide personalized recommendations based on a user's prior searches and saved preferences.

Immersive Navigation: Roads Come to Life in 3D

The second major feature, Immersive Navigation, completely redesigns the driving interface with vivid 3D visuals. The map now renders buildings, overpasses, and terrain in detail, while highlighting critical road elements like lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs.

This spatial awareness is made possible by Gemini models analyzing fresh real-world imagery from Street View and aerial photos. The result is an accurate, context-rich view of landmarks, medians, and road geometry that helps drivers navigate complex intersections and lane changes with greater confidence.

The update also includes enhanced natural voice guidance and parking insights near destinations.

Availability and Rollout

Immersive Navigation has begun rolling out across the United States, with availability expanding over the coming months to eligible iOS and Android devices, CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built-in.

Ask Maps is rolling out in the U.S. and India on both iOS and Android, with desktop support coming soon.
