Apple to Open Siri to Rival AI Assistants Including Gemini and Claude in iOS 27

Apple is preparing to open Siri to competing AI assistants in a sweeping overhaul of its voice assistant platform, according to a Bloomberg report published on March 26. The move, expected to be announced at WWDC 2026 on June 8, will allow AI chatbots like Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, and xAI Grok to integrate directly with Siri in iOS 27, ending OpenAI ChatGPT's exclusive partnership status.

How the Extensions System Works

Apple is developing a new "Extensions" system that will let users choose which AI services work inside Siri. The feature will be accessible through the Apple Intelligence and Siri section in Settings on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

Users who have third-party AI chatbot apps installed from the App Store will be able to:

  • Enable or disable specific AI services from a dedicated menu
  • Route Siri queries to their preferred chatbot
  • Receive download links for AI chatbot apps directly from Apple

The system mirrors how the current ChatGPT integration works but extends it to multiple providers, giving users full control over which AI assistant handles their requests.

Supported AI Services

Major AI platforms expected to be available through the new extensions system include:

  • Google Gemini - Google's flagship AI model
  • Anthropic Claude - Known for its reasoning capabilities
  • xAI Grok - Elon Musk's AI assistant
  • Perplexity - AI-powered search engine
  • Amazon Alexa - Amazon's voice assistant
  • Meta AI - Meta's AI platform
  • Microsoft Copilot - Microsoft's AI assistant

Each company will need to enable support for the new integration in their iOS apps to participate.

Strategic and Financial Implications

The move represents a significant strategic shift for Apple, transforming Siri from a closed ecosystem into an open AI platform. This approach offers several advantages:

  • Revenue diversification: Apple can generate income from AI subscription purchases processed through the App Store, rather than relying on a single partner
  • Competitive positioning: By becoming the platform where all major AI assistants operate, Apple positions itself as the neutral hub of the AI assistant market
  • User choice: iPhone users gain the flexibility to use whichever AI service best suits their needs

Apple's Own AI Ambitions

While opening Siri to competitors, Apple is simultaneously developing its own AI-powered Siri upgrade. The company has been working on integrating large language model capabilities directly into its assistant, making it more conversational and capable of handling complex tasks.

What's Next

Apple is expected to formally announce the new Siri extensions system at WWDC 2026 on June 8, with iOS 27 launching to the public in fall 2026. Companies interested in integrating their AI chatbots with Siri will likely receive developer tools and documentation at the event.
