How VAT is calculated

VAT is always calculated on the net amount, never on the total. That single sentence accounts for most VAT errors.

Adding VAT

You have the price before tax and want the total. Multiply by 1.15 for the Saudi rate.

Gross = Net × 1.15

Extracting VAT

You have a tax-inclusive amount and want the tax inside it. Divide by 1.15 to recover the net; the difference is the VAT.

Net = Gross ÷ 1.15

The common mistake

Taking 15% of the gross. On a 115 invoice that gives 17.25 when the right answer is 15.00 — the tax is 15% of 100, not of 115. The gap shows up in every return.

Common questions

What is the VAT rate in Saudi Arabia?

The standard rate is 15%, in force since 1 July 2020, up from 5% before that. The tool offers both, since older invoices are calculated at 5%.

How do I extract VAT from a gross amount?

Divide the gross by 1.15 to get the net; the difference is the VAT. For example 230 ÷ 1.15 = 200, so the VAT is 30. Taking 15% of 230 would give 34.5, which is wrong.

What is the difference between net and gross?

Net is the price of the goods alone, with VAT added at invoicing. Gross is what the customer actually pays. In Saudi Arabia, prices displayed to consumers must be tax-inclusive.

How are fractions of a riyal handled?

The whole calculation runs in whole minor units with half-up rounding, as in ZATCA’s own examples. Net plus VAT therefore always equals the gross exactly, without the one-halala drift that breaks invoice reconciliation.

Is the amount sent to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser. That is deliberate: the numbers typed here are invoice and contract values.

Are other countries supported?

Yes — the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and others, and you can type any rate by hand.

For businesses

Calculating VAT by hand? The invoicing probably is too

If you redo this on every invoice, the calculator is not the problem. We connect e-invoicing systems to ZATCA’s requirements and automate issuing and reconciliation against your accounting system.
