Nūn sākinah & tanwīn
Say the nūn clearly, with no added ghunnah.
Merge the nūn into the next letter, holding a ghunnah for two counts.
Merge the nūn into the lām or rā with no ghunnah at all.
Turn the nūn into a hidden mīm with ghunnah before the bā.
Conceal the nūn between clear and merged, with a two-count ghunnah.
Mīm sākinah
Say the sākin mīm clearly, with no added ghunnah.
Merge the mīm into the mīm that follows, with ghunnah.
Conceal the mīm at the bā with ghunnah, closing the lips lightly.
Qalqalah
Bounce the sākin letter audibly — without adding a vowel to it.
Ghunnah
Hold the nasal ghunnah for two counts on the doubled nūn and mīm.
The madd
Stretch for two counts — no more, no less.
Stretch four or five counts — the hamza is in the same word.
Stretch two, four or five counts — the hamza opens the next word.
Stretch a full six counts — obligatory.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the text and the recitation come from?
The Uthmani text is served from our own origin, and so are the word timings — nothing about what you are studying is sent to a third party. Only the audio file itself streams from quranicaudio.com.
Why is only Hafs available?
Changing the riwayah changes three things at once: the text, the rulings, and the recitation. Running the Hafs engine under a Warsh label would not be an approximation, it would be wrong — on scripture. The other readings are listed, disabled, until each is done properly.
Which recitation is this?
Hafs an Asim, the reading used in most of the Muslim world. Rulings can differ in other riwayat.
Why are some rulings dashed?
Because they only apply if you stop on that word — qalqalah kubra at the end of a word, for instance. Where you stop is your decision, so the tool marks it rather than asserting it.
Does it handle where to stop?
No. Waqf and ibtida depend on meaning and on the mushaf's own stop marks. That is a separate discipline and this tool does not attempt it.
Why does the whole word light up rather than the letter?
The finest unit the recitation timings resolve to is the word. The ruling itself is coloured precisely on its letter; the audio plays the word that letter sits in.
