OpenAI Acquires Astral to Supercharge Codex with Python Developer Tools

OpenAI has announced it will acquire Astral, the startup behind some of the most widely used Python developer tools in the ecosystem. The deal will see Astral's team, led by founder and CEO Charlie Marsh, join OpenAI's Codex division to build the next generation of AI-powered software development tools.

What Astral Brings to the Table

Astral is best known for three open-source tools that have become staples in the Python developer workflow:

• uv — a blazing-fast dependency manager with over 500 GitHub contributors
• Ruff — an extremely fast Python linter and code formatter
• ty — a modern type checker for Python

All three are written in Rust, giving them a significant speed advantage over traditional Python-based alternatives. Together, they cover dependency management, code quality, and type safety — core pillars of any professional Python development setup.

Why This Matters for Codex

OpenAI's Codex platform has experienced explosive growth, now serving over 2 million weekly active users — a threefold increase in users and a fivefold jump in usage since the start of the year. Recent model variants like GPT-5.2-Codex and GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark have pushed the platform's capabilities further.

But code generation alone is not enough. By integrating Astral's tooling expertise, OpenAI aims to expand Codex into a comprehensive system capable of planning, modifying, testing, and maintaining software across the entire development lifecycle.

Open Source Stays Open

A key concern in the developer community has been the fate of Astral's open-source projects. OpenAI has pledged to continue supporting uv, Ruff, and ty after the acquisition closes. Charlie Marsh reinforced this commitment, stating: "As part of Codex, we'll continue evolving our open source tools to push the frontier of software development."

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

This marks OpenAI's second acquisition in just two weeks, following the purchase of Promptfoo for AI security testing. The pattern is clear: OpenAI is building out the entire developer workflow, not just the code generation layer. With Neptune for training visibility, Promptfoo for agent security, and now Astral for Python tooling, Codex is evolving from a coding assistant into a full development platform.

What Comes Next

The deal is subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions. No financial terms have been disclosed. Once closed, the Astral team will work on deeper integrations between their tooling and Codex's AI capabilities, with a focus on enabling truly agentic AI systems that can operate across entire software workflows.
