Apple Unveils MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max: Up to 4x AI Performance

Apple has officially launched the new MacBook Pro lineup powered by the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, delivering what the company calls its biggest leap in AI performance for a professional laptop. The new machines offer up to 4x faster AI workloads compared to the previous generation and up to 8x gains over the original M1 models.
Key Highlights
- World's fastest CPU core in an 18-core configuration with 6 super cores and 12 performance cores
- Neural Accelerator integrated into every GPU core for on-device AI acceleration
- Up to 128GB unified memory on M5 Max with 614GB/s bandwidth
- Up to 4x faster LLM prompt processing compared to M4 generation
- 24-hour battery life maintained despite the performance gains
Under the Hood
The M5 Pro features up to 64GB of unified memory with 307GB/s bandwidth, while the M5 Max doubles that to 128GB at 614GB/s. Both chips include a next-generation GPU architecture with a Neural Accelerator embedded in each GPU core, a first for Apple silicon that enables AI workloads to run directly alongside graphics tasks.
Storage speeds have doubled, reaching up to 14.5GB/s on the new SSD controller. The M5 Pro starts at 1TB of storage while the M5 Max begins at 2TB.
AI at the Core
Apple is positioning the new MacBook Pro as a local AI powerhouse. The Neural Accelerators enable on-device execution of large language models, AI image generation up to 8x faster than M1, and support for custom model training without relying on cloud services. Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated, with enhanced privacy features ensuring that AI processing stays on-device whenever possible.
"MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max redefines what's possible on a pro laptop, now up to 4x faster," said John Ternus, Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering.
Connectivity and Display
Both models feature three Thunderbolt 5 ports, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 through the new Apple N1 chip, a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View, and the Liquid Retina XDR display pushing 1,600 nits of HDR brightness. A nano-texture display option is available for glare-free working environments.
Pricing and Availability
The new MacBook Pro is available in space black and silver:
- 14-inch M5 Pro: starting at $2,199
- 16-inch M5 Pro: starting at $2,699
- 14-inch M5 Max: starting at $3,599
- 16-inch M5 Max: starting at $3,899
Pre-orders opened on March 4, with general availability since March 11, 2026.
What This Means
With major AI workloads increasingly moving to the edge, Apple is betting that professionals will prefer running models locally rather than depending on cloud APIs. The M5 generation closes the gap between laptop and desktop AI capabilities, making the MacBook Pro a serious contender for developers, researchers, and creatives working with AI tools daily.
