New York, USA - 21 July 2024 - In an interview on TODAY, George Kurtz, CEO of cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, provided details about a major computer outage that disrupted systems worldwide, including airports, banks, and emergency services.

The Incident

On the morning of the incident, many people woke up to the "blue screen of death" on their computers. The outage affected various sectors, causing significant inconvenience and raising concerns about potential cyber-attacks.

Cause of the Outage

Kurtz clarified that the issue was not a cyber-attack but a result of a software bug in a recent update. The bug affected Microsoft operating systems, leading to widespread disruptions. CrowdStrike quickly identified and resolved the issue, and systems are now in the process of recovering.

Response and Recovery

Kurtz expressed deep regret for the impact caused to customers and travelers. The CrowdStrike team has been working around the clock with affected customers to reboot systems and restore normal operations. While many systems are coming back online, some may take additional time to recover fully.

Complexity of Cybersecurity

Highlighting the complexity of cybersecurity, Kurtz noted that staying ahead of adversaries is a constant challenge. Despite robust measures in place, the interaction between the update and various versions of Microsoft operating systems led to unforeseen issues.

Moving Forward

CrowdStrike is committed to ensuring that all affected systems are fully operational as soon as possible. The company continues to work closely with customers to prevent future incidents and maintain system security.
