Grok Imagine Image 2.0: Developer Guide to xAI's Image Model

xAI shipped Grok Imagine Image 2.0 on August 7, 2026. Within 24 hours it ranked second on the Arena leaderboards for both text-to-image generation and image editing — behind OpenAI's gpt-image-2, ahead of every other model on the board. The new editing capabilities are live in consumer products today; API access for the precision editing tools is listed as coming soon.

This guide covers what changed, what the existing API supports right now, and how to wire image generation into a production workflow on xAI's stack.

What Changed in Image 2.0

Image 2.0 is built on Aurora, xAI's autoregressive Mixture-of-Experts architecture. The previous Imagine model handled text-to-image generation competently. Image 2.0 reframes editing as a first-class capability rather than a bolt-on addition.

Precision editing tools now live in the product:

  • Magic Wand — change only the region you select; the rest of the image is untouched
  • Segmentation — select precise areas using a brush or point-and-click
  • Background removal — exports subjects with full transparency for compositing
  • Smart Resize — change aspect ratio across nine presets from 1:2 to 2:1; the model fills in the gaps automatically

Multi-reference input. You can now pass up to five images in a single request. The model combines them for style transfer, product shots on custom backgrounds, and character consistency across a series.

Text rendering. Blurry or incorrect small text was a common failure mode in earlier image models. Image 2.0 was trained specifically on typography and layout fidelity, producing sharp text for infographics, UI mockups, and product labels.

Templates. The product ships with pre-configured workflows for commercial tasks: product shots, professional headshots, e-commerce listings, game assets, and marketing posters.

The API: What Works Today

The official Grok Imagine API has been available since May 2026. The model ID for high-quality generation and editing is grok-imagine-image-quality. It is compatible with both the xAI SDK and the OpenAI SDK — the same base-URL swap pattern as the Grok text APIs.

If you are already using Grok 4.5 for agentic workflows, you do not need a second API key. The same key covers both text and image endpoints.

Multi-Reference Editing via REST

The editing endpoint accepts multiple images. Refer to each input image by position in the prompt using IMAGE_0, IMAGE_1, etc.

The API charges per image generated. Input images in edit requests carry an additional per-image input charge. Pricing is on the xAI pricing page under the Imagine section.

Use Cases for Gulf and MENA Enterprises

The Gulf e-commerce and retail market maps directly onto Image 2.0's capabilities. Several workflows produce commercial value without custom model training:

The gap between Image 2.0 and gpt-image-2 is narrow on both leaderboards. For most production use cases the more relevant question is which model fits your existing stack. If you are already on xAI's API for text, adding image generation carries near-zero additional integration cost.

What to Watch

xAI listed the precision editing features — magic wand, segmentation, and background removal — as "API coming soon" at the August 7 launch. The standard image editing endpoint (/v1/images/edits) is live now; full programmatic support for the region-selection tools will follow the consumer product release.

Note: Multi-reference editing via the official API supports up to three source images. The consumer product currently supports up to five. Expect the API limit to increase when the full editing feature set ships.
