What You'll Learn

In this tutorial, you'll set up:

  • AI coding assistants (Claude, GPT-4, or alternatives)
  • IDE integrations for seamless AI assistance
  • Project configuration for optimal AI context
  • Workflow tools for vibe coding productivity

Prerequisites

  • A computer with internet access
  • Basic command line familiarity
  • A code editor (VS Code recommended)
  • An account with an AI provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, or similar)

Step 1: Choose Your AI Assistant

Several AI assistants work well for vibe coding:

Option A: Claude (Recommended)

Claude excels at understanding context and generating production-quality code.

  1. Sign up at claude.ai
  2. For API access: Get your API key from console.anthropic.com
  3. Install Claude Code CLI (optional):
npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code

Option B: ChatGPT / GPT-4

OpenAI's models are widely available and well-documented.

  1. Sign up at chat.openai.com
  2. For API access: Get your key from platform.openai.com

Option C: Cursor IDE

An AI-native code editor with built-in assistance.

  1. Download from cursor.sh
  2. Sign in with your account
  3. Configure your preferred AI model in settings

Step 2: Configure Your IDE

VS Code Setup

Install these extensions for the best vibe coding experience:

# Claude extension
code --install-extension anthropic.claude-vscode

# GitHub Copilot (alternative)
code --install-extension GitHub.copilot

# Useful utilities
code --install-extension esbenp.prettier-vscode
code --install-extension dbaeumer.vscode-eslint

Configure settings in .vscode/settings.json:

{
  "editor.formatOnSave": true,
  "editor.codeActionsOnSave": {
    "source.fixAll.eslint": true
  },
  "claude.contextFiles": ["README.md", "ARCHITECTURE.md"],
  "claude.autoContext": true
}

Cursor IDE Setup

Cursor comes pre-configured for AI assistance:

  1. Open Settings (Cmd/Ctrl + ,)
  2. Navigate to AI > Models
  3. Select your preferred model (Claude, GPT-4, etc.)
  4. Enable "Include open files in context"
  5. Set context limit based on your needs

Step 3: Project Configuration

Help AI understand your project better with these files:

Create a CLAUDE.md (or AI_CONTEXT.md)

This file gives AI context about your project:

# Project Context

## Overview
Brief description of what this project does.

## Tech Stack
- Frontend: Next.js 14, React, Tailwind CSS
- Backend: Node.js, PostgreSQL
- Deployment: Vercel

## Code Conventions
- Use TypeScript strict mode
- Prefer functional components
- Use kebab-case for file names
- Follow existing patterns in the codebase

## Important Files
- `src/lib/api.ts` - API utilities
- `src/components/` - Reusable components
- `src/app/` - Next.js app router pages

## Common Tasks
- Add new page: Create file in `src/app/[route]/page.tsx`
- Add API endpoint: Use `src/app/api/[route]/route.ts`

Configure .cursorrules (for Cursor)

You are an expert developer working on a Next.js project.

Rules:
- Use TypeScript for all code
- Follow existing patterns in the codebase
- Write clean, readable code with proper error handling
- Include JSDoc comments for public functions
- Prefer composition over inheritance

Step 4: Set Up Your Workflow

Terminal Integration

Add AI to your terminal workflow:

# Add to ~/.bashrc or ~/.zshrc
alias ask="claude"
alias code-review="claude 'Review this code for issues:'"

# Function for quick AI queries
vibe() {
  claude "$@" --context .
}

Git Integration

Configure pre-commit hooks for AI-assisted reviews:

# Install husky
npm install -D husky
npx husky init

# Create pre-commit hook
echo 'npx lint-staged' > .husky/pre-commit

Step 5: Test Your Setup

Verify everything works with a simple test:

  1. Open your project in your IDE
  2. Create a new file test-vibe.ts
  3. Ask your AI assistant:
Create a TypeScript function that validates email addresses.
Include proper error handling and JSDoc documentation.
  1. The AI should generate something like:
/**
 * Validates an email address format
 * @param email - The email address to validate
 * @returns True if valid, false otherwise
 */
export function isValidEmail(email: string): boolean {
  const emailRegex = /^[^\s@]+@[^\s@]+\.[^\s@]+$/;
  return emailRegex.test(email);
}
  1. If you get a reasonable response, your setup is complete!

Troubleshooting

AI Not Understanding Context

  • Ensure your CLAUDE.md or context file is in the project root
  • Check that relevant files are included in the AI's context window
  • Try being more specific in your prompts

Slow Response Times

  • Reduce context size by excluding large files
  • Use .aiignore to exclude node_modules, build folders
  • Consider using a faster model for simple tasks

Code Quality Issues

  • Add linting rules to catch AI mistakes
  • Always review generated code before committing
  • Use TypeScript strict mode for better type safety
